The story of Frank-a real historical figure around whom mystery and controversy swirl to this day-is the perfect canvas for the genius and unparalleled reach of Olga Tokarczuk. In the decade to come, Frank will traverse the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires with throngs of disciples in his thrall as he reinvents himself again and again, converts to Islam and then Catholicism, is pilloried as a heretic and revered as the Messiah, and wreaks havoc on the conventional order, Jewish and Christian alike, with scandalous rumors of his sect's secret rituals and the spread of his increasingly iconoclastic beliefs. Before long, he has changed not only his name but his persona visited by what seem to be ecstatic experiences, Jacob Frank casts a charismatic spell that attracts an increasingly fervent following. In the mid-eighteenth century, as new ideas-and a new unrest-begin to sweep the Continent, a young Jew of mysterious origins arrives in a village in Poland. The Nobel Prize–winner's richest, most sweeping and ambitious novel yet follows the comet-like rise and fall of a mysterious, messianic religious leader as he blazes his way across eighteenth-century Europe. "Tactile world-building, an island full of compelling characters, and the budding romance between Sean and Puck all make for an unforgettable book that's quite unlike anything else out there." If "The Scorpio Races" sounds like nothing you've ever read, that's because it is." "Stiefvater not only steps out of the young adult fantasy box with "The Scorpio Races" but crushes it with pounding hooves. The author takes great liberties with the Celtic myth, but the result is marvelous." É "Upon the sea-battered and wind-swept isle of Thisby, fall brings the famed and feared capaill uisce, or water horses, and with them, death. Magneto's new status quo as an idol to the growing mutant population is super cool. Every character stands out in their own way. His family is entertaining and it just feels good to see them all together under one roof. It really helps you connect with him, which is great for those that have had a hard time connecting with his character over the past few years, myself included. We get a sense of his new day-to-day life and how much this entire undertaking means to him. Scott Summers is back in the spotlight, and the hope and confidence he brings with him is refreshing. Hickman uses this first issue to bring us up to speed with the field leader of all leaders: Cyclops. This is a great start to the regular ongoing after the HEAVY events of HoX and PoX. The X-Men are back on top of the comic book world and it feels so good. In a book of this size I expected more, but as the first third was basically her as a ten year old, then the second half was her just out of high school, it stood to reason that you shouldn’t expect hot and heavy scenes until she’s a full fledged adult. I was surprised that there were very few sex scenes. She journeys through obstacles that ask her to redefine fear, family, and love, so that when she finally has a chance to be with the guy she should be with, she’s ready intellectually and emotionally. This book follows Caitlyn Sullivan from her kidnapping at the age of ten, to her early adult years around age 18, to her adult years which I think was mid- to late-twenties if I remember correctly. It was a lot longer than previous Roberts I’ve read too. This book had a different structure than those I’ve read by her in the past. Other romances I’ve tried seem to be sex focused, which I totally understand, but I’ve always liked how Roberts gives you more than you expect. Her books are mostly story with the romance being well woven into that story. Nora Roberts remains one of my go-to romance authors. Judy Dick - Primary school teacher Miss Walker It is brilliant stuff.ĭavid Gulpilil - Aboriginal loner Fingerbone Bill The way the Aboriginal is portrayed remains modern even after a few decades. I saw it first as a child and then the other night as an adult and I just thought it was magnificent.
